Fantastic beasts and where to find them? In Florence on the banks of the River Arno. Last month the Florentine artist Sedicente Moradi placed five wooden animals on the newly opened sidewalk along the Arno between the city beach at Piazzo Poggi and the Ponte Vecchio. The animals, a giraffe, a crocodile, 2 deer and a unicorn, were entirely created from drift wood recovered from the Arno. You can get up close with them on the sidewalk along the Arno that was constructed for the trucks to be able to reach the construction site when a 7-meter deep and 200-meter long sinkhole caused the dramatic collapse of Lungarno Torrigiani in May 2016.
When I visited the site on Sunday morning, the water level of the Arno was so low that I could walk on the dried up terrain under Ponte alle Grazie and see the Lungarno and Ponte Vecchio from a different point of view. You can reach the sidewalk from the city beach in Piazza Poggi.
